Hey hi hello! It’s nice to see you here.
My name is Pablo. Mostly, I’m in training to become a psychiatrist. But sometimes I write and sometimes I tell stories. You probably haven’t seen anything I’ve done, but maybe one day I will be able to share my story in a way that is helpful to others. In the meantime, this is a home for me to put my thoughts, a place to share anything that may have been published, and for now, a repository of pictures of my dog, Sunshine. Welcome.
I live, work, and practice psychiatry in New York City. I’m originally from the suburbs of Los Angeles but grew up for some time in Guadalajara, Mexico where much of my family still lives.
My friends describe me as a chit-chatter, which is probably fair. I do love getting to know folks. I think at my core, I love people. And I’m fascinated by all the ways to be a human.
When I’m not trying to be a doctor or a writer, I’m likely at a concert (pop-punk emo never dies) or trying a new recipe (most recently, I’ve been working on braising things). I am also known as a very enthusiastic dancer at weddings. I also annoy my neighbors playing the trumpet, which was a Christmas gift and maybe the best gift I’ve ever received. I’d like to pretend I ride my bicycle regularly, but it’s had a flat tire for a long time and I’ve done nothing about it…
This is Sunshine. Sometimes I call her Sunny for short. For many years, she was my biggest fan and greatest comfort. She died in my arms a few years ago but I think about her all the time. She weighed about 5 pounds, though the vet told me she should weigh 4.5 (you try to deny that face treats). She kept me sane throughout the pandemic, throughout medical school, throughout residency, throughout breakups and let downs, throughout so many moments of uncertainty. In return, she demanded my absolute and unending devotion, which she had. She also expected treats ad infinitum and did not understand the word “diet.”
If you ever need some extraordinary comfort in a tiny package, I highly recommend adopting an elderly chihuahua from your local shelter. Sunny came from the “hard streets” of LA, spent a couple of weeks in a shelter, and then impacted my life in ways I could not have anticipated.
